  • Overview

The idea of taking a classic and tweaking it to meet modern-day expectations is something we see everywhere we look, but sometimes it happens in the most subtle ways. By "subtle," we mean an implementation so clean and flawless that, for many, it may have gone unnoticed. Many drivers are contemplating the idea of owning a hybrid or electric vehicle for the first time. They may be reminded of age-old names like the Honda Insight, which was the first production hybrid available in America. However, as the years went by, Honda has also begun adding cutting-edge hybrid powertrains to many of its classic gasoline models. This is where we get the likes of the 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid.

Honda's lineup is flourishing as of late, but throughout the expansive list of automobiles available here at Klein Honda, you're almost certainly familiar with the Accord. Why is this? The Accord is no spring chicken and has been an active member of Honda's lineup since the 1970s. The Accord Hybrid itself was first introduced with the 2005 model. It has since gone on to define what Honda has been able to do when refining a classic. The 2023 Accord Hybrid is available in four trims––twice as many trims as the traditional gasoline Accord––with the Sport Hybrid being the base trim for the hybrid powertrain. The other three trims are the EX-L Hybrid, Sport-L Hybrid, and Touring Hybrid. The 2023 Accord Hybrid is a must-buy for drivers who want a more efficient take on one of Honda's most iconic models.

  • Performance

A blue 2023 Honda Accord Sport Hybrid is shown from the front driving on a highway.

    The New Face of Performance

The 2023 Accord Hybrid is exciting because, for the first time, the Accord Hybrid outperforms the available gasoline powertrain. The hybrid powertrain has now replaced the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 gasoline engine from the prior years as the top engine option for the Accord, unifying the gasoline and hybrid models. This dramatically streamlines the shopping experience, and the hybrid powertrain is an excellent substitute for the old gasoline engine, but why is that? While the turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine was removed, an identically-sized 2.0L I-4 engine is the heart of the new hybrid powertrain.

Unlike most hybrids, Honda does away with the traditional Continuously Variable Transmission in favor of directly connecting the engine and electric motors to the wheels for greater power and efficiency. Comparatively, the 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque from the hybrid setup is much higher than the 192 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque the gasoline-powered 2023 Accord models offer. This is a slight 6.25% increase in horsepower and a more significant 28.6% increase in torque output. That level of power would already be an exceptional value proposition, but it's the money that this fuel-saving powertrain saves you that truly makes the Accord Hybrid as appealing as it is. If you purchase the 2023 Accord Hybrid, you'll be getting EPA-estimated ratings of up to 46 MPG in the city and 41 MPG on the highway.[b]

Hybrid powertrains are becoming more common in many modern-day vehicles. The Accord Hybrid is so great because it supplies that distinctive Accord experience but is more forward-looking and better for the environment without sacrificing performance. With the Accord Hybrid, you only stand to gain by purchasing one––there are no significant disadvantages to owning the hybrid powertrain, which may not have been the case for many hybrids or EVs a few short years ago. Like most hybrid variants of pre-existing automobiles, it's more expensive than the traditional gasoline version, but the money you'll save in the long run is unmatched.

  • Dimensions

    A Comfortable Midsize Sedan

The Honda Accord Hybrid shares its dimensions with the gasoline-powered models from the interior to the exterior, but the hybrid models do have a slightly higher curb weight. For example, the lightest gasoline-powered Accord has a curb weight of 3,239 lbs. The heaviest of the bunch––the Touring Hybrid––has a curb weight of 3,532 lbs. This is a 9% increase, but it won't be a noticeable difference during the typical operation of your vehicle. The 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid is the same size across its four trims: 195.7 inches long, 57.1 inches tall, and 73.3 inches wide.

Your Honda Accord Hybrid will be an adequately-sized sedan but not too bulky, meaning it will comfortably fit in your driveway or garage. The Honda Accord Hybrid is a great car for commuting or carpooling. That's not only because of the Accord Hybrid's excellent fuel economy ratings but because this midsize sedan is roomy enough for a full cabin of adults to comfortably travel together. Honda achieves this by offering generous interior dimensions with almost identical amounts of space for passengers in the front and rear.

    Designed for Full-Size Passengers

Although the numbers aren't a one-to-one match, the Accord Hybrid is a vehicle where the people sitting in the back seat will have nearly the same amount of leg, head, and shoulder room as the front row. Both rows share an identical 55.4 inches of hip room. The second closest measurement between the two rows is the shoulder room, where the front row gets 57.9 inches, while the back row's shoulder room is only 2.4% less at 56.5 inches. This makes it a great choice for families and car-pooling commuters alike.

Shoulder room and hip room are important to know, but what can affect the comfort of a vehicle by a large margin is head and legroom. Headroom and legroom differ between the two rows, but they are impressively similar, with the 37.5 inches of headroom in the front row being met with 37.2 inches for back seat passengers. Legroom tells a similar tale, with 42.3 inches in the front and 40.8 inches in the back. Sedans–especially hybrid models––are also regularly light on cargo space, but even there, the Accord Hybrid has an impressive showing, with 16.7 cu.ft. of space in its trunk on every trim. You’ll have no problem packing for a road trip in this model.

  • Features

    An Upscale Experience

The Honda Accord Hybrid is stocked with an impressive array of features at no extra cost, and there are even more upgrades to be made across the four trims. Some of the features that come with every hybrid trim are simply not available in the gasoline models, such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Honda sees the Accord Hybrid as a premium experience, meaning every trim level comes with a 10-way power-adjustable seat with two-way power-adjustable lumbar support. Every hybrid trim except the base model adds two-position memory to save your preferred seating position and heated leather seats. If you purchase the priciest Accord Hybrid, you'll also get ventilated front seats, which aren't as common as heated seats but are something you won't want to live without in the warmer months.

Included with every 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid is a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment center with all your audio traveling through eight speakers positioned around your cabin with 180 watts of power. The speaker system in the Accord Hybrid is suited for your favorite music genres, and the bass packs a larger punch than the standard speaker setup in the non-hybrid base model. However, when you purchase the priciest Accord Hybrid, you get a dozen speakers by Bose––one of the most revered audio specialists in the world––and a dedicated subwoofer channel. This trim level also includes a wireless phone charger that will quickly charge most smartphones on the market with its 15 watts of power.

Although the wireless phone charger and Bose audio system are premiums reserved for the highest-tier trim, the Accord Hybrid still comes with an incredible amount of tech. Integrated into every 12.3-inch infotainment center are wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and built-in Amazon Alexa support. The Accord Hybrid's infotainment solution is one of Honda's most robust systems, and it's an appreciated addition given the cost increase between the hybrid model and the gasoline-powered Accords.
